Lane Cedar Chest

Description:

This is a Lane Cedar Chest, identified by the Style No. 482010 and Serial No. 140221. Lane cedar chests were iconic pieces of furniture produced by the Lane Company, founded in 1912 in Altavista, Virginia. The company specialized in high-quality cedar chests, often marketed as "hope chests," and became a household name by the mid-20th century.

Dating the Chest:

The serial number can be read backward to determine the manufacturing date. In this case:

  • Serial Number: 140221
  • Reversed: 122041
  • Date of Manufacture: December 20, 1941.

This chest was likely produced right before or during the early years of World War II, a period when Lane was promoting its cedar chests as symbols of home and comfort.

Historical Context:

Lane cedar chests were often used as "hope chests" by young women to store linens, clothing, and keepsakes in preparation for marriage. The Lane Company also marketed its chests as secure storage solutions, as the cedar lining helped protect against moths and other pests.

During the 1940s, Lane chests were popular wedding and Christmas gifts, and their durable craftsmanship made them treasured heirlooms. The style number indicates the design and finish, which can vary from traditional to mid-century modern.

Condition:

  • Overall: Good condition, as noted.
  • Potential Issues: Depending on its condition, factors such as scratches, dents, or damage to the cedar lining may affect value.
  • Lock Safety: Be aware that some Lane chests made before 1987 had locks that could accidentally trap someone inside. Lane offered a free lock replacement program to address this issue.

Current Value:

The value of a Lane cedar chest depends on its condition, age, style, and demand in the vintage furniture market. Given its date and historical significance:

  • Estimated Value: $200–$400 USD.
  • Factors Affecting Value:
    • Unique design or rare style increases desirability.
    • Original finish and good preservation add value.
    • Historical significance (e.g., WWII-era production) can be appealing to collectors.
