Original Watercolor Paintings

Item: Original Watercolor Paintings

Category: Fine Art – Watercolor

Medium: Watercolor on Paper

Size: Not specified

Condition: Excellent

Date Period: 1972

Distinguishing Marks: Artist's signature, possibly "Shineer" or a variation

Provenance: Unknown

Artist Research & Background

The artist’s signature is partially legible, appearing to be "Shineer" or a variation. No well-documented artist by this exact name is currently recorded in major art databases. However, the style of the paintings aligns with 20th-century American or Canadian regionalist watercolorists, often depicting rural landscapes, cabins, and seasonal scenes. The technique suggests an experienced painter, likely trained in impressionistic or folk art traditions.

Further research is needed to verify the artist. A professional art authentication service or a regional fine art appraisermay be able to identify the artist more accurately.

Estimated Market Value (Pending Professional Verification)

The value of these watercolors depends on factors such as artist recognition, subject matter, and condition. If the artist is identified as a known or listed painter, the value may increase significantly.

  • If the artist remains unknown:
    • Auction Estimate: $100 - $500 each
    • Retail/Dealer Price: $200 - $800 each
    • Private Sale Estimate: $150 - $600 each
  • If the artist is a known or listed watercolorist:
    • Auction Estimate: $500 - $3,000+
    • Retail/Dealer Price: $800 - $5,000+
    • Private Sale Estimate: $500 - $2,500+

Recommendation for Professional Appraisal

Given the strong technique and vintage date (1972), a formal appraisal is recommended to:

  1. Verify the artist’s identity using art signature databases or art specialists.
  2. Assess the historical and artistic significance to determine collectibility.
  3. Provide authentication documentation for resale, insurance, or auction.

Hi, I’m not able to decipher…

Hi, I’m not able to decipher the artist from the photo. The closest I can come up with is “Shineer” or “Schelden” or something similar from the artwork style. The only artist I could come up with was ”Jayne Schelden,” but she doesn’t sign her painting in the same way and her style, while being similarly themed, is different. That’s why I was suggesting a professional appraisal from an art expert. Here’s some additional information that may help you find the artist:

Steps to Identify the Artist

  1. Examine the Artwork Closely:
    • Signature Details: Look for additional initials, full names, or unique stylistic elements in the signature that might provide more clues.
    • Subject Matter and Style: Analyze the themes, techniques, and styles used. This can offer insights into the artist's background or the art movement they were associated with.
  2. Consult Art Databases and Archives:
    • Artprice.com: A comprehensive database of artists. While "Jayne S" isn't listed, variations or lesser-known artists might be found.
    • Local Art Institutions: Contact museums, galleries, or art schools in the region where the painting was acquired. They might have records or knowledge of regional artists.
  3. Seek Expertise:
    • Professional Appraisers: They can provide insights based on the painting's style, materials, and other characteristics.
    • Art Historians: Especially those specializing in 20th-century art, they might recognize the artist's work or signature.
  4. Utilize Online Art Communities:
    • Forums and Groups: Websites like Reddit's r/Art or specialized art forums have members who might offer insights.
    • Social Media: Platforms like Facebook or Instagram have art identification groups where you can share images and details for crowd-sourced information.
  5. Consider Art Signature Directories:
    • Books and Online Resources: There are directories that catalog artist signatures, which might help in matching the signature on your paintings.

Additional Considerations

  • Provenance: If you have any history of the artwork's ownership or where it was purchased, this information can provide context and assist in the identification process.
  • Artistic Context: Understanding the art scene of the 1970s, especially in the region where the artist might have been active, can offer clues.

Identifying an artist can be a meticulous process, but combining these approaches increases the likelihood of discovering more about "Jayne S" and the value of your watercolor paintings.
