Ganesha Statue - 21" Tall, Heavy Metal Sculpture

Description

  • Subject: Ganesha, the Hindu deity of wisdom, prosperity, and remover of obstacles.
  • Material: Likely bronze or brass (based on visible patina and sheen). These metals are commonly used in traditional Indian religious sculptures.
  • Dimensions: 21 inches tall
  • Weight: Described as extremely heavy, which supports the assumption of solid metal casting.
  • Design Details:
    • Ganesha is depicted in a seated position, symbolizing calmness and wisdom.
    • Ganesha’s traditional iconography includes multiple arms (signifying power and ability), holding objects like a trident, broken tusk, and offering gesture (representing protection and blessings).
    • The presence of another deity or attendant beside Ganesha suggests symbolic spiritual guidance.
    • The intricate detailing on Ganesha’s crown, jewelry, and garments suggests a skilled artisan's work.
  • Condition: Described as good, with visible dust but no major signs of damage. A thorough cleaning may enhance its visual appeal.

Historical and Cultural Context

  • Ganesha Statues are prominent in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, symbolizing wisdom, prosperity, and protection.
  • Statues of this size and material are often found in temples, home altars, or spiritual spaces and can range from contemporary reproductions to antique artifacts.
  • If this is an antique piece (over 100 years old), it may hold significant historical value. Traditional Indian bronze statues are created using the lost-wax casting method, a time-intensive technique often resulting in highly detailed pieces.

Potential Origin

  • Based on the style, intricate detailing, and religious significance, this piece likely originates from India or Nepal, where metal Ganesha sculptures are commonly crafted.
  • The presence of Buddhist and Hindu symbols may suggest influence from Tibetan Buddhism or South Indian craftsmanship.

Estimated Value

The value of this statue depends on several factors:

✅ Material & Weight: If solid bronze or brass, its inherent metal value will add significant weight to its worth.
✅ Craftsmanship: The detailed artistry seen in the jewelry, facial features, and symbolic objects suggests higher quality.
✅ Age & Authenticity: Older pieces (especially pre-20th century) can command much higher prices, especially if confirmed as antique.
✅ Condition: Despite some dust, the statue appears intact with no visible cracks or missing parts.

Estimated Value Range:

  • $300 – $600 USD for a modern decorative piece.
  • $800 – $1,500 USD for a vintage hand-crafted statue with intricate details.
  • $2,000 – $5,000+ USD if identified as an authentic antique or linked to a known artisan, temple, or region of historical significance.

Recommended Steps for Accurate Valuation

  1. Professional Appraisal: Consulting an expert specializing in Asian religious art or Hindu bronze sculptures can help confirm authenticity, age, and craftsmanship.
  2. Material Identification: A magnet test or professional metal testing can confirm whether it’s bronze, brass, or a less valuable alloy.
  3. Cleaning & Preservation: Consider professional cleaning to enhance the statue’s details without risking damage to the patina, which can be valuable in itself.

Where to Sell or Appraise

  • For accurate valuation, contact:
    • Sotheby’s (Asian Art Department)
    • Bonhams (Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian Art Division)
    • Christie’s (Antiquities and Religious Art)
  • For private resale or online listing, platforms like 1stDibs, Ruby Lane, or eBay can attract collectors.

More pics added

Hi Charley. I hope you are well. I've added some new pics that might be of some interest to you. Let me know if it adds more insight when you the moment. I also found out it weighs 52 lbs. I had not realized until I had pulled it down and actually got it home that it was sitting on a Cobra throne. This thing gets a tad more interesting.
