Roosters

By lgregory9, 21 March, 2025
Description

I would describe these roosters as earthenware. The finish is matte and the colors are dull yellow, blue, green, and some red. They are about 12 inches tall. They are in good condition, but there is a chip on the base of one of the roosters.  I am told that my great-grandmother purchased these in Savannah, Georgia from an antique store.  Since she died before I was born, I would guess she purchased these roosters between the 1940s-early 1960s.  The roosters have been passed to my grandmother, my mother, and now to me.

Vintage English Earthenware Rooster Figurines

Description:
This pair of earthenware rooster figurines is marked "Made in England" on the base. Each is approximately 12 inches tall, featuring a matte finish in muted yellow, blue, green, and red tones. The figurines appear hand-painted and have a textured surface resembling feathers. The style aligns with traditional English pottery and folk art themes.

Historical Context:
Given the information that they were purchased in Savannah, Georgia, between the 1940s and early 1960s, these figurines are likely mid-20th century decorative pieces. Earthenware rooster figurines were popular during this period as decorative kitchenware or dining room pieces, particularly in English cottage-style and farmhouse décor trends. The "Made in England" marking is a common export stamp used from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century, confirming their British origin.

Condition:

  • Overall Condition: Good
  • Notable Issues: One rooster has a small chip on its base, which may affect value slightly but is common in vintage ceramic items.
  • Surface Condition: No visible cracks or major damage, and the paint appears to be well-preserved with minimal wear.

Value Estimate (Current Market in CAD/USD):

  • Individual Value: $75 - $125 CAD each
  • Pair Value: $150 - $250 CAD
Values are based on similar English-made earthenware rooster figurines, particularly those from mid-century, with collectible and folk art appeal.

Factors Influencing Value:

  • Positive Factors: Authentic vintage English earthenware, well-maintained paintwork, and intact glazing.
  • Negative Factors: The chip on one rooster slightly reduces the value, and lack of identifying maker’s mark limits the potential for premium pricing.

Recommended Actions:

  • Consider minor restoration to the chipped base if you intend to increase resale value.
  • If you are selling, vintage shops, online platforms like Etsy or eBay, and folk art collectors are ideal markets.
  • For a more precise valuation or if these are potentially linked to a well-known pottery studio, consulting a professional antique appraiser is recommended.

Conclusion:
Your roosters are charming decorative pieces with historical value tied to mid-20th century English earthenware exports. While they may not command extremely high prices, their decorative appeal and family history make them a meaningful addition to your collection or a worthwhile sale item in the vintage/folk art market.
