"Wien-Stephansdom" Artist Signed in Pencil Ludwig "Adamus" Hand Colored Lithograph

By yulianel, 22 March, 2025
Description

This is a framed hand-colored lithograph of the famous St. Stephan's Cathedral in Vienna, Austria, by Ludwig Adamus. It was signed by the artist in pencil. Dates approximately back to 1940s-1950s, in my opinion. The lithograph was signed after the initial framing, on the outside paper, suggesting an artist's personal approval of the work.

Identical 2 unframed items were sold in an auction in 2020 here: https://www.proxibid.com/lotinformation/57031349/wienstephansdom-artist-signed-in-pencil-ludwig-adamus-hand-colored-lithograph

There is a very minor damage on the frame.

Wien-Stephansdom Hand-Colored Lithograph by Ludwig Adamus

Item Description:
This is a framed hand-colored lithograph depicting the iconic St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) in Vienna, Austria. The artwork was created by the artist Ludwig Adamus and is signed in pencil, suggesting a personal approval of the piece. The signature appears outside the initial framing, indicating that the lithograph may have been signed post-production. The estimated date of origin is the 1940s–1950s.

Dimensions:

  • Framed Size: 13.75 in x 10.75 in
  • Unframed Size: 8.1 in x 6.75 in

Condition:

  • Artwork: Excellent
  • Frame: Minor damage, but overall solid and presentable

Historical Background:

Ludwig Adamus was an artist known for his detailed lithographs and etchings, often featuring prominent European landmarks. His works, particularly those featuring Austrian architecture, have historical significance and appeal to collectors of European art, travel memorabilia, and architectural prints. St. Stephen’s Cathedral is a Gothic architectural masterpiece, making this lithograph a notable piece for collectors interested in Vienna’s cultural history.

Current Market Value:

Based on comparable sales history:

  • An identical unframed print by Ludwig Adamus was sold in 2020 for approximately $25–$40 CAD.
  • Framed versions typically fetch a higher value, especially when signed by the artist. The addition of the frame, though showing minor wear, enhances the display quality and boosts the perceived value.

Estimated Value (Framed): $60–$100 CAD
Estimated Value (Unframed): $30–$50 CAD

Factors Affecting Value:

  • Condition: The lithograph itself is in excellent condition, which is crucial for maximizing its value. The slight damage to the frame lowers the overall value slightly.
  • Signature: The artist's signature in pencil adds to the artwork's authenticity and desirability among collectors.
  • Provenance and History: The item's history is unknown, which may limit its appeal to higher-end collectors.

Recommendation:

If you are seeking a precise valuation or are interested in selling this item at auction, I recommend consulting a professional appraiser specializing in European lithographs or fine art. Given the market for mid-20th-century lithographs and signed pieces, this item may appeal to collectors of Austrian memorabilia, architectural enthusiasts, or art collectors seeking vintage works.

If desired, I can help you draft a listing description for potential sales platforms such as eBay, Etsy, or specialized auction houses like Proxibid.
