Antique Mahogany Loveseat

Description:
An antique mahogany wood loveseat with a curved back and elegant splat backrest design. The back features three prominent vase-shaped vertical splats, typical of classical revival or Federal styles. The arms are gracefully curved, and the seat has been reupholstered in the 1990s with a blush-toned, textured, button-tufted fabric. The overall frame is solid with a rich patina and signs of light age-appropriate wear.

Category:
American Antique Furniture – Seating (Loveseat / Settee)

Materials:

  • Frame: Solid mahogany wood
  • Upholstery: 1990s reupholstered fabric, likely a synthetic blend
  • Padding: Likely foam or updated material from the 1990s refurbishing
  • Style: Federal Revival / Hepplewhite influence (noted in curved arms and splat back)

Estimated Date Period:
Circa early 20th century (1900–1920s).
While Federal styles date back to the early 1800s, this piece appears to be a revival version, possibly produced during the Colonial Revival movement in the early 20th century when furniture of earlier American styles regained popularity.

Condition:

  • Wood Frame: Good structural integrity, some light finish wear and scuffing consistent with age.
  • Upholstery: Clean and presentable, but not original. The 1990s fabric and cushion are in good used condition.
  • Useability: Fully functional and stable as a seating piece.

Provenance:
Family heirloom, passed down through generations. Upholstered in the 1990s. No known manufacturer label or branding visible in the photos.

Estimated Market Value:

  • Retail/Decorative Value: $150 – $350 USD
  • Insurance/Replacement Value: Up to $400 USD (for a similar piece with custom upholstery)
  • Auction Value: $100 – $200 USD depending on region and buyer interest

Value can increase with:

  • Original upholstery (if intact and stylish)
  • Verified maker label or documented provenance
  • Restored finish or refinished woodwork by a professional

Recommendation:
A professional appraisal is not strictly necessary unless you suspect it is by a known cabinetmaker (e.g., Duncan Phyfe) or if you plan to insure it as part of a higher-value estate. However, a professional conservator could help restore the wood finish and possibly increase its display value.
