Vanguard Studios Framed Needlework Cowboy Scene

Item: Framed Needlework Folk Art
Medium: Likely machine-stitched or screen-applied needlework-style print on canvas
Framer/Label: Vanguard Studios, Pacoima, CA, USA
Model/Code: 850105 (printed on original manufacturer label)
Date Estimate: Late 1960s to early 1980s
Dimensions: 23.5" tall x 19.5" wide
Condition: Excellent (minor expected age wear on paper backing, frame intact, art protected)
Weight: Approx. 7 lbs.

Description & Background:

This framed artwork is a textile or textile-printed image produced by Vanguard Studios, a prolific mid-century design house based in California. Vanguard was known for mass-producing decorative wall art and home accents during the 1960s–1980s, blending rustic Americana, Western, and modernist themes.

The scene captures a lively cowboy camp: musicians playing string instruments, men dancing, and others gathered in the background by covered wagons. While it resembles cross-stitch or needlepoint, many Vanguard pieces were mechanically printed onto fabric to mimic the appearance of needlework, which increased affordability and scalability for home décor.

Historical & Decorative Value:

Although not considered “fine art,” Vanguard pieces have become collectible for their nostalgic charm and period-authentic aesthetic, especially among mid-century Western or Americana décor enthusiasts. The frame and textile are in very good condition, which significantly supports the value.

Current Market Value (2025):

  • Retail/Decorative Estimate: $75–$125
  • Collector's Resale Value: $45–$85 depending on regional demand and buyer interest

If confirmed as actual hand-stitched needlework rather than a printed textile, the value could increase toward $150–$200, especially if attributed to a known folk artist.

Recommendation:

This is a unique piece with strong nostalgic and decorative appeal. If you're uncertain whether it is truly needlework or a printed fabric, a local textile conservator or folk art appraiser could assist. It may be worth having it examined in person if you're considering insuring or reselling it.
