By jaysyn6, 22 April, 2025
Description

This rug is one of many I have. They seem to a have the same type of tag.  I'm not exactly sure of year.  If the writing can be translated, it might help.

Thank you!

Moroccan Handwoven Wool Rug (3x5 ft)

Item Overview

  • Type: Hand-knotted Moroccan area rug
  • Size: Approx. 3' x 5' (90 x 150 cm)
  • Material: 100% wool
  • Construction: Hand-knotted, flat-woven base with pile
  • Design: Traditional geometric diamond medallions, typical of Berber or Middle Atlas tribal motifs
  • Colors: Earthy tones – browns, golds, oranges, and creams
  • Fringe: Natural wool tassels at both ends
  • Origin: Morocco (verified by label)
  • Label: Reads "MAROC / MARRUECOS / MOROCCO / ARTISANAT" with spaces for quality rating and design pattern (handwritten fields worn)
  • Condition: Good vintage; minor edge wear and signs of use typical of handwoven rugs, but no visible holes or tears

Translation Note

The tag is printed in multiple languages (Arabic, French, Spanish, English). In Arabic, it reads “الصناعة التقليدية” which translates to “Traditional Craft” – a designation commonly found on government-certified Moroccan artisan goods. This adds credibility and provenance to the item.

Historical Context

Moroccan rugs with this type of label were often government-inspected exports, especially from the 1970s through 1990s, when Moroccan wool rugs surged in popularity globally. Rugs of this size and pattern were typically woven by women in village cooperatives, particularly in the Middle Atlas region. The tight, geometric motifs are characteristic of Azilal or Boujaad tribal styles.

Estimated Market Value (as of 2025)

  • Retail (boutique, vintage home stores): $120–$250 USD
  • Private sale / resale platforms (e.g., Etsy, eBay): $80–$150 USD
  • Auction / estate sale: $60–$100 USD

Value can increase if:

  • Part of a matching set or collection
  • Cleaned professionally
  • Properly photographed and described in listings

Recommendations

  • No professional appraisal needed unless you suspect rare tribal origin or the rug is particularly old (pre-1950s).
  • If you own several similar rugs, consider documenting them individually and having them evaluated as a collectionby a specialist in North African textiles.
  • To retain value: avoid machine washing, store rolled (not folded), and keep away from direct sunlight.
