Profile picture for user kkuberski

Description

Hey there...is that any chance you can tell me whether or not this piece is one of the artist's calendar posters?  It doesn't appear to look like the others I'm seeing.  If you could let me know what kind of print it is and it's value I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks!

“Tenochtitlan” Print by Jesús Helguera

Artist

  • JesĂşs Helguera (1910–1971) was a highly celebrated Mexican illustrator and painter known for his romantic, patriotic, and mythological depictions of Mexican history and culture.
  • His work was widely distributed in the mid-20th century, especially through calendars and commercial printssponsored by companies such as Fábricas de Calendarios in Mexico.

Artwork Title: Tenochtitlan

  • This image depicts a visionary moment from Aztec mythology—the symbolic founding of Tenochtitlan, the future site of Mexico City, with indigenous figures observing an eagle devouring a snake atop a cactus.
  • This scene is one of the most iconic in Mexican cultural heritage and deeply resonates as a national symbol (also featured on the Mexican flag).

Print Details

  • Medium: Offset lithographic print on paper
  • Publisher mark: "Lito Leosa Mexico" (a known commercial lithographer)
  • Signature: Printed (not hand-signed) — JesĂşs Helguera
  • Framing: Original or period frame with cardboard backing and glass
  • Dimensions (art): Approximately 20.5" x 16.5"
  • Condition: Very good to excellent; some light discoloration and wear to the frame, but image is clear and well-preserved

Calendar Print or Not?

  • While many of Helguera’s works were used in calendars, your piece does not have the typical calendar format(e.g., printed date pad or promotional company name).
  • Based on its size, border text, and print quality, this is more likely a standalone decorative print, likely sold as part of a portfolio or wall dĂ©cor piece — possibly mid-century (1950s–70s).
  • The notation “Prop. Art Asegurada” and the professional lithographer credit support the idea of it being a commercially licensed print, not a calendar backing.

Estimated Value (2025 Market)

  • Retail/Vintage DĂ©cor Market: $75–$150 (framed, clean condition)
  • Online Resale (eBay, Etsy, Chairish): $40–$120 depending on condition and presentation
  • Unframed print alone: $20–$50 depending on market demand

Your purchase at $7.50 was an excellent bargain.

Cultural and Collectible Significance

  • Helguera prints like this are increasingly collectible among those interested in Mexican heritage, Chicano art, and mid-century cultural ephemera.
  • The work’s subject matter and historical-romantic aesthetic make it appealing for folk art collectors, teachers, and heritage centers.

Recommendation

No professional appraisal is required unless you are curating a high-value collection. To preserve value:

  • Consider reframing it with acid-free materials if the cardboard back is deteriorating.
  • Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading.
