Description
Pope Gregory XIII silver medal minted between 1575 through 1580, later repurposed in the 18th century to be given as gift for baptisms and christenings. Depicts the Apostle Peter atop the handle. Front of the medal depicts Pope Gregory XIII with coat of arms. On obverse depicts Peter receiving the key from Jesus. I was able to find one example of this exact medal/coin in Stanford University's Museum. However, the one they have on display is not comparable. They have question marks where some letters are missing. Mine has all the letters.
Rare Pope Gregory XIII Medal/Coin minted 1575-1581/spoon
The handle was attached sometime in the mid 1700's. It was popular in Europe to take coins and attach handles with apostles atop them. However, it was rare even for those wealthy to use such an important Catholic relic.
