Vintage Folk Art Painting

By yulianel, 29 April, 2025
Description

This is a fork art vintage painting, acrylic? on wood.

Still life, geranium in a pot. Colors are very vibrant.

On solid wood, 0.75'' thick, not sure what type of wood, its' texture can be seen on the back.

The painting is signed in initials in the lower right corner and also full signature at the back.

Reads like: 1973 June M. Eleury.

I did not manage to recognize the artist, likely local Canadian artist.

Vintage Folk Art Painting of Geranium in Pot (1973)

Title (Assigned): Geranium in Pot
Artist: June M. Fleury (signed J.M.F.)
Date: 1973
Medium: Acrylic on solid wood panel
Size: 19.75" Ă— 7.5" Ă— 0.75"
Condition: Good
Provenance: Signed and dated verso; artist unknown in public art records
Subject: Still life – potted geraniums

Style and Significance:

This work is a charming example of 1970s North American folk art, likely created for personal enjoyment, local art markets, or community craft fairs. The style features a clear appreciation for botanical subjects and traditional domestic themes, rendered with bold, unblended colors and a clean composition.

The hand-painted edges give it a framed-like effect without a formal frame, which was a common presentation style for DIY and rustic folk art during this period.

Artist Insight:

  • June M. Fleury does not appear in major art indexes or auction records, suggesting she was likely a regional or hobbyist painter.
  • The well-preserved condition and personal signature imply it may have been a cherished piece or gift, possibly made for a friend or family member.

Valuation:

Taking into account:

  • Original hand-painted folk art
  • Solid wood substrate (which adds weight and character)
  • Signed, dated, and in good vintage condition

Estimated Market Value (2025):
$50–$100 USD (approx. 70–135 CAD)
Note: If June M. Fleury is part of a known regional art circle, value may increase slightly with local interest.

Recommendation:

This piece has decorative and nostalgic value and would appeal to collectors of:

  • 1970s vintage dĂ©cor
  • Rustic or cottagecore aesthetics
  • Canadian folk and outsider art

If you’re planning to sell, you might consider marketplaces like:

  • Etsy (highlight: handmade vintage folk art)
  • eBay (for broader reach)
  • Facebook Marketplace or local art fairs (especially in Canada)
