Raw Jade Specimen (British Columbia Origin)

General Description:

  • Approx. 4.5 pounds raw stone, uncut and unpolished
  • Believed to be 100% jade, displaying at least three shades of green, some translucency, and no cracks
  • Believed to originate from British Columbia, which is known for nephrite jade, not jadeite
  • Handwritten numbers and markings visible on surface may relate to prior valuation or categorization

Jade Type Analysis:

1. Nephrite vs. Jadeite:

  • British Columbia is a major global source of nephrite jade, not jadeite.
  • The color, translucency, and surface grain seen in the images are consistent with nephrite, especially BC “polar” jade varieties.

2. Quality Indicators (based on visible traits):

  • Color variation (light to dark green tones) is typical of nephrite and can add to aesthetic value
  • No visible cracks or major inclusions is a strong plus
  • Some translucency under light (as mentioned) is important — it raises the grade
  • Markings suggest the stone was evaluated, possibly by a mine or carver

Estimated Market Value:

Raw nephrite jade (BC origin) typically sells for:

  • Low grade: $5–$15/lb
  • Mid-grade: $20–$50/lb
  • High-grade translucent stone: $80–$150/lb or more (for carving-quality)

**Your 4.5 lb stone, assuming high-quality translucent nephrite, could be valued between:
$250 – $675, potentially more if it’s proven high-grade carving stone.

Additional Notes:

  • Some raw BC nephrite fetches over $1,000 per stone depending on the carving suitability and clarity
  • Your mention of an earlier $800 valuation seems realistic if the stone is of high quality and translucent throughout

Recommendation:

To ensure the best value if you plan to sell:

  • Have it professionally tested and graded — a local gemologist, jade dealer, or lapidary appraiser can confirm jade type and grade
  • Avoid selling to resellers or bulk mineral buyers unless absolutely necessary
  • If possible, sell directly to carvers, artisans, or through specialized jade or lapidary marketplaces
