History
My mother received this purse as a gift in 1940s from the Prime Minister of Vietnam.
There is no paper work of any sort. It was a French made purse. Vietnam was colonized by the French from 1857 til 1954.
Description: This is a mid-20th-century handbag crafted from genuine chocolate brown crocodile skin. It features a structured, trapezoidal silhouette with two sturdy handles and gold-tone hardware, including a locking clasp mechanism. The interior is lined in smooth brown leather and divided into multiple compartments for organization. The brand “INNOVATION” is embossed on the exterior.
Maker’s Mark: Stamped "INNOVATION" – this may refer to a lesser-known high-end European leather goods maker. The font and placement suggest mid-century European production, possibly French. Further provenance research would be needed to confirm manufacturer details, as "Innovation" was also a high-end Parisian department store.
Provenance: Gifted in the 1940s by the Prime Minister of Vietnam to your mother. Given Vietnam’s colonial ties to France until 1954, the item is likely a French luxury good from the period, possibly custom made or acquired at a high-end Parisian boutique.
Materials:
Exterior: Genuine crocodile skin
Interior: Leather
Hardware: Gold-tone locking clasp with original key
Condition: Excellent vintage condition – no visible cracks in the leather, handles intact, hardware appears original and functional. Light patina consistent with age.
Estimated Value: $1,000 – $2,500 USD Depending on the auction platform, provenance documentation, and market demand for vintage exotic skin handbags.
Values for vintage exotic leather handbags—especially with diplomatic or couture provenance—can increase substantially. A confirmed connection to a recognized luxury house (e.g., Hermès, Moynat, or a Parisian custom atelier) would significantly raise the value.
