Burl Walnut Pedestal Desk

Profile picture for user Louiegirl
By Louiegirl, 16 May, 2025
Description

An extremely heavy antique Pedestal Desk with locking drawers. Long-shaped center drawer flanked by a bank of 3 drawers on either side (one on left is a faux double drawer that acts as a file cabinet) and brass handles. Made by hand (dove-tailed). Does NOT have a leather top. The veneer is a Reverse Diamond Match and/or Butt & Book Matched, I think.

The desk is in fairly good shape but sustained some water damage on the top and we need an appraisal for insurance purposes.

This appraisal could be for replacement, repair or restoration, please. We actually love it and want to repair and possibly restore it, anyway. Thanks.

I am guessing English Burl Walnut Veneer.
Distinguishing marks
The veneer is Reverse Diamond Matched and/or Butt & Book Matched pattern. (I think). There is also a number 66 or 99 stamped into the underside of the center drawer. This was all I could find.

I could use an appraisal and…

I could use an appraisal and any information of some sort for our insurance company as this desk sustained some water damage after a hurricane/tornado. Thank you!

Antique Burl Walnut Pedestal Desk

Item: Antique Burl Walnut Pedestal Desk
Origin: Likely English
Estimated Age: Circa early 20th century (ca. 1920s–1940s)
Dimensions: 71" W x 40" D x 30" H
Condition: Good, with some water damage to the top

Description:
This is a high-quality burl walnut executive pedestal desk featuring an intricate reverse diamond or book-matched veneer. The craftsmanship includes solid dovetail joinery, fluted corners, and original brass escutcheons and pulls in a stylized fan or tassel motif. The right bank includes standard drawers, while the left has a faux double-front file drawer. The wood appears to be walnut with burl veneer panels, consistent with early to mid-20th-century English furniture, particularly Art Deco or transitional Edwardian styles.

The number stamped inside the drawer (66 or 99) may indicate a model or batch number rather than a maker's mark. The lack of a known maker or label somewhat limits attribution but not quality.

Current Fair Market Value (Good Condition): $1,800 – $2,500 USD
Insurance Replacement Value (Restored Condition): $3,500 – $4,500 USD
Restoration Estimate: $400 – $800 depending on extent of veneer repair and refinishing.

Recommendation:
Because of the desk’s superior craftsmanship, age, and material, professional restoration is worthwhile—especially if it holds sentimental or functional value. A conservator familiar with veneer repair and antique walnut finishes is ideal.
