Description

This item is NOT magnetic. The greenish color does not come off with water or polish. There are scratches pictures on the base that show a bright yellow gold color underneath. There are no visible manufacturer or artist markings that we can find.

It is 28 1/2 inches high and 19 to 19 1/2 inches across depending on what part you measure and weighs 55lbs.

A reverse google search tells me something different every time I put in a picture of a different part.

🔍 ITEM REPORT

Object Description

This is a cast bronze neoclassical-style stand or jardinière base, most likely from the late 19th to early 20th century, with ornate mythological and classical decorative elements.

  • Material: Almost certainly bronze (not magnetic, green patina, golden scratch test, significant weight at 55 lbs).
  • Dimensions: 28.5 inches tall, 19–19.5 inches diameter.
  • Weight: 55 lbs.
  • Condition: Good vintage condition; shows oxidation and patina, consistent with age. Some surface corrosion on the bottom, possibly from iron bolts or moisture contact.
  • Design Elements:
    • The legs depict winged sphinxes, a common motif in neoclassical and Egyptian revival styles.
    • Decorative filigree scrollwork between the legs.
    • Reliefs of animal skulls and garlands around the rim (possibly bovine skulls, referencing ancient Roman sacrificial iconography).
    • Paw feet, a design detail tied to ancient and 19th-century revivalist styles.

🧾 PROBABLE ORIGIN AND STYLE

Likely Origin:

  • European, possibly French or Italian, though similar pieces were made in the U.S. during the Victorian and neoclassical revival periods (late 1800s to early 1900s).

Artistic Style:

  • Neoclassical / Grand Tour influence – the sphinx motif and acanthus-leaf details reflect 19th-century neoclassicism, inspired by Greco-Roman and Egyptian themes.
  • The design may also overlap with Art Nouveau in its curvilinear metalwork scrolls.

Use:

  • Likely an urn stand, jardinère base, or pedestal for a sculpture or decorative bowl.
  • Originally would have supported a heavy glass, bronze, or marble bowl (as you mentioned acquiring it with a glass top).

🔬 AUTHENTICATION & MATERIAL VERIFICATION

Supporting Evidence:

  • Patina: The green patina suggests genuine age; bronze oxidizes this way naturally over decades. Not the result of paint or surface treatment.
  • Non-Magnetic & Gold Scratch Test: Indicates it is not cast iron; likely cast bronze or similar copper alloy.
  • Weight & Casting Details: The mass and casting depth suggest a quality foundry process, not a cheap reproduction.

Markings:

  • No foundry or maker’s mark visible, though there may be one obscured by oxidation or corrosion. You might try light cleaning with mineral oil and soft cloth on the underside, or checking the interior legs again with better light.

💰 ESTIMATED VALUE (2025 MARKET)

Auction / Private Sale:

  • $600–$1,200 USD depending on region, provenance, and condition.
  • If identified as a 19th-century French piece, value may reach $1,500–$2,000.

Retail (Antique Store or Design Market):

  • $1,200–$2,500 USD, especially if restored or with provenance.
  • High appeal for interior designers and collectors of architectural salvage.

🛠️ RECOMMENDATIONS

For Selling:

  • Consider listing on:
    • 1stDibs, Chairish, LiveAuctioneers, or EBTH for upscale exposure.
    • Local antique dealers or galleries may also be interested.

For Further Authentication:

If you want to confirm age and maker:

  • Contact a professional appraiser or auction house specializing in antique metalwork (e.g., Bonhams, Heritage, or Freeman's Auctions).
  • A XRF metal analysis can confirm alloy composition if you want scientific verification.

🧼 Care and Preservation Tips

  • Do not polish the green patina—it contributes to authenticity and value.
  • Clean gently with a dry or slightly oiled cloth if needed.
  • Store or display in a dry, indoor environment to prevent further oxidation or rusting of any internal fasteners.
