This is a beautiful example of 19th-century French faience (fine glazed earthenware) from the Choisy-le-Roi manufactory, made specifically for the luxury Parisian retailer L’Escalier de Cristal.
Origin and Marks
• Factory: Choisy-le-Roi (near Paris), operated by Hippolyte Boulenger & Cie in the second half of the 19th century. The impressed/stamped mark “H.B. CHOISY” (sometimes written as HB Choisy-le-Roi) is the classic factory mark for pieces produced under Boulenger’s direction (roughly 1870s–1890s). The “1” you see is likely a size or mould number.
• Retailer: The elegant gilt script “Escalier De Cristal Paris” on the back is the mark of L’Escalier de Cristal, one of the most fashionable Paris shops for crystal, glass, and high-end tableware (1804–1923). They commissioned exclusive lines from top factories like Choisy-le-Roi, Creil-Montereau, Longwy, etc. Your plate was made at Choisy and sold through their showroom—hence the dual marking, which is very desirable to collectors.
The body is white-bodied faience with a crazed (craquelé) glaze, typical of the period, and the front decoration is a transfer-printed + hand-finished polychrome scene of children at play in a rustic garden (one child on a swing/hammock, others climbing or watching). These “enfants” or genre scenes were popular in decorative dessert/plate services of the era.
Approximate Date
Circa 1875–1895 (Napoleon III / early Third Republic period).
