Description
Purchased at estate auction for about $700 I was counterbid by an Indian woman who made it a point to let me know I won a very nice piece that was valued at $2500 or more.
I look at it and can see the sword appears to be ivory but the rest I am unsure (I am not an expert on this, so I should not have been bidding!). The rest of the carving appears smooth and it is hard to see any signs of whther it is bone or ivory so I fear it may be synthestic. In the finer areas of the carving there may be evidence of the nature of the medium.
Re: Ivory(?) Shiva carving
never ever bid on an Item you know nothing about. Judigig by the pictures you are really lucky because it appears to be genuine.
It's a statue of Shiva the destroyer. prob. made in the late 19th century judging by the color of the wood. It's really hard to be sure so I would advise to get it appraised at an proper auction house.
