Antique Desk

Appraisal complete
Description Beautiful desk with original hardware. Bottom shelf railings look to be brass or copper. Some of the pegs on bottom shelf need to be glued back into openings but I stored them in the draw so as not to lose them. Can anyone tell me the style and approximate value?

History Desk belonged to my grandmother. She bought it from an antique dealer at least 45 yrs ago. I believe she tried to refinish it but never completed the job.

This piece dates about 1875/80 and is in the Aesthetic style. The Aesthetic Movement was a fairly minor phenomenon in the history of decorative arts. Lasting from around 1868 to 1910, it served mainly as a bridge between the high Victorian sensibility and the radical shift of the Arts & Crafts style. Pieces in this style tend to far less ornate than the other Victorian sub styles such as Rococo, Gothic and Renaissance Revival Most of it tends to be rather well made, the smaller pieces such as desk still sell well in a market tired of Victorian furniture. We see them go in the $400.00- $600.00 range at auctions. Lovejoy
