The winding knob is in the 12 o'clock position.Works great and I carry it with me every day. There's no way of taking the chain off, so I think it was a part of the watch when it was made. Re: Waltham Pocket watch
Ok so from what you have described, the serial number on the movement (holding the gears in), indicate that it was manufactured in or around 1880. Also the roman numerals and the red numbers under indicate that it IS in fact a railroad watch. I am not sure on the appraisal of it but at least now, you have more information that if you go to a Jewelry store or place as such this info will help you describe better what type of watch it is.
Re: Waltham Pocket watch
I have the same exact watch. I know it is 17jewel and 18s. Do you have an appraisal amount for it.
Re: Waltham Pocket watch
Ok, from what you have described, the watch was made in 1880, as by the serial number on the movement (holding the gears in). Also due to the fact that it has both Roman Numerals as well as regular numbers indicates that it IS a railroad watch. I am not sure on the appraisal value as not indicated about how many jewels it has. But at least with this knowledge if you take it to a Jeweler or place as such, you can better describe what type of watch and from what era it is. Hope this helps.
