$100 Confederate States of America, dated 1862 with hand-written number #65798. This is stamped on the front edges in black ink stamp..."Safe Conduct Pass" on one end, and "Libera Conducto Permeso" on the other. The back of the item is stamped in black "The bearer of this pass is to be removed from the battle area and is to receive food and rest", and signed by J.H. Gilbert
Cap is in very good condition. Made of dark grey wool, with black hat brim that seems to be very thick cardboard-like material. The cord is braided with braided slip knots for adjustment. The buttons on the side that anchor the cord are brass eagles. The insignia on front is embroidered with what appears to be brass-colored threads, wreath design with a"C" &"S"intertwined and a sword through them.I haven't been able to find this particular insignia in searches.
I thought the box was a kleenex holder when I first saw it. Thought then it was a candle holder due to the item in the middle. Two of the hinges are broken and/or missing. It has the screens inside and they are not damaged. I am requesting more history on the item.
