Antique Signal Cannon

By Gsting, 8 October, 2014
Description

I have an antique signal cannon that has been in my family for a few generations.  My grandfather (father's side) passed it to him and then he passed it onto me in the 1970's.  It is brass with cast iron wheels.  Approximately size:  24" overall length.  11" tall.  The wheels are 12" in diameter and the barrel is 12" long.  The bore is approximately 7/8" in diameter.  The cannon weighs about 41 pounds.  Unfortunately, I can find no markings whatsoever on it.  Thanks - It has been a puzzle for me since receiving it. (My Dad passed away not long after giving it to me.)

I know very little about it, though my father indicated his father had it given to his father (My Great Grandfather). At one point, I remember someone telling me it was used in the civil war to signal position.

Re: Antique Signal Cannon

This is a nice little signal cannon mostly used on yacht's or small ships, they also used them for sailboat racing, your gun was made from 1880-1920's There were many of these little cannon companys at that time and most didn't sign them, the value on this one would be about $250
