Antique table with hidden compartment

Part of my family is from the south and I was told this table was used to hide silver during the civil war.  The hidden compartment has enough space for silverware, etc.  I was also told the table was sunk in a pond with the silver in the compartment when union soldiers invaded but I'm not sure if that's an old wive's tale!
