Chinese Mudman

By scorpialady, 8 March, 2013
Description

I recently acquired this Chinese mudman figurine at an auction, and do not know much about it. It has no stamp on the bottom so I am assuming it would date this one before 1890?

I have never seen a mudman with such exquisite detail.  Because of the detail on this man's face, beard, feet, the creasing in the clothing and even his exposed backbone-it looks like the work of a master.  This mudman is in near perfect condition with only a few tiny fleabites around the base.  No repairs that I can see.  EXCELLENT; NEAR-PERFECT CONDITION!

Re: Chinese Mudman

I doubt it is that old but can't say anything definitively. I wouldn't take there not being a stamp to ever be a sign of age... especially when there is no bottom. Markings go back nearly a thousand years if not more and again their presence can help date a piece due to what they say, but simply being there or not is irrelevant.

Re: Chinese Mudman

Yes, I guess that makes sense since there is no bottom.  Didn't think about that!  Thank you!
