Dorothy Thorpe glasses

By judy07', 12 March, 2025
Description

Vintage Dorothy Thorpe glassware. Light yellow satin with clear stem. The lighting on some of the photos makes the yellow appear much darker than it actually is. The photos that depict the yellow lighter are the most accurate. Some are slightly more faded than others. I suspect due to how often each was used. They’re in very good condition . They are very delicate with a solid  base.

Dorothy Thorpe Glassware Collection

Item Description:
This is a vintage collection of Dorothy Thorpe glassware, known for its distinctive light yellow satin finish on the upper portion of the glass, paired with clear stems. These glasses were popular in the mid-20th century, especially during the 1950s and 1960s. Dorothy Thorpe was a renowned glassware designer famous for her elegant yet minimalist designs, often featuring silver overlay or pastel tints.

Details:

  • Designer: Dorothy Thorpe
  • Material: Glass
  • Condition: Good, with slight variations in color intensity likely due to usage patterns. No visible cracks or chips.
  • Size: Largest glass is 7 inches tall, medium is 6 inches tall, and the smallest is 5 inches tall. All have a 3-inch diameter base.
  • Date Period: 1960s

Historical Context:
Dorothy Thorpe was a celebrated American designer who imported blank glassware from companies like Corning and decorated them herself. Her designs are iconic for their subtle yet refined elegance, often sought after by collectors and mid-century modern enthusiasts.

Current Market Value:

  • Set of 10-12 glasses in good condition: $150 – $300
  • Complete sets with 16+ pieces in excellent condition: $350 – $600
  • Individual glasses (if sold separately): $15 – $30 each

Value Factors:

  • Condition: Your set appears to be in good condition with no visible cracks or chips, which significantly improves its desirability.
  • Color Rarity: The light yellow satin finish is less common than Dorothy Thorpe’s more well-known silver-banded designs, which may increase its uniqueness.
  • Demand: Dorothy Thorpe glassware is highly collectible, especially among fans of mid-century modern décor.

Recommendations:

  • Ensure proper cleaning with gentle care, as these glasses are delicate.
  • Selling as a full set may attract higher-end collectors and buyers looking for cohesive tableware designs.
  • For a more precise appraisal or insurance value, consider consulting a glassware or vintage expert or visiting a reputable auction house that specializes in mid-century glassware.
