Gorham Sterling Silverware set - "Chantilly" - 142 pcs.

By ivanmoore209, 14 February, 2015
Description

Set of Gorham Chantilly Sterling Silver Flatware

I was given this set as a gift recently; it had been inherited by my landlord from his deceased aunt. He already has a set of silver, so he gave me this set, because they’re monogrammed with “M” and my last name is Moore. He doesn’t know when they were created, but he estimates they’ve been in the family since the 1930s.

All pieces are Chantilly Design, marked “Sterling”, unless I note otherwise. The knives have Stainless blades. The pieces are all marked (unless otherwise noted) with “PAT. 1895”, with a LION PASSANT (FACING RIGHT), ANCHOR, AND “G”, and the word STERLING. I’ve attached closeup photos of the markings. Most pieces are monogrammed with “M” unless otherwise noted.

One thing I noted was that the 10 butter knives have a backwards “N” in the word “STERLING”.

142 Pieces: (Forgive my ignorance as to the naming conventions of the items; I'm trying to identify them as well as I can)

12 Dessert Forks

8 Dessert Spoons

1 Serving Fork (monogrammed with “JJK”, not “M” as are most of the other pieces)

1 Serving Fork (not Chantilly, but Lancaster Rose, monogrammed with  “MKA”)

24 Dinner Spoons

23 Dinner Forks (1 appears to be missing from set)

12 Salad Forks

4 Serving Spoons (Seashell shaped)

2 Ladles (Seashell shaped)

1 Small ladle (Seashell shaped)

1 Flame-shaped serving spoon

6 Soup Spoons

12 Long Spoons

1 Large serving spoon (This one doesn’t appear to be a Chantilly design, but it is Gorham Sterling, the Luxembourg design, I believe. I’ve attached a closeup photo of the markings, it is the one with a “T” in a diamond, “PAT. 1893) and the Gorham markers (Lion, Anchor, G), stacked above the word “STERLING”. It is also monogrammed with “JJK”, not “M” as are most of the other pieces)

1 Master Butter Knife

1 Small Slotted Spoon

1 Small Prong Fork

1 Prong Fork w/ Clamp

1 Tomato Server (I don't think this is a Gorham item, it is not a Chantilly design, but it is Sterling)

1 Tiny Prong Fork

1 Little Tongs

1 Big Serving Knife

1 Small Serving Knife

1 Cake Server

1 Cake Breaker

12 Dinner Knives

10 Butter Knives (2 appear to be missing. These knives have a backwards “N” in the word “STERLING”.
