Antique Wooden Rocking Chair

Item Description:

  • Category: American Furniture
  • Material: Solid wood (likely oak or another hardwood)
  • Condition: Excellent (seat reupholstered, otherwise original)
  • Date Period: Estimated to be around 100 years old (early 20th century)
  • For Sale: No

Item History & Characteristics:

This antique rocking chair appears to be a pressed-back oak rocker, a style popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These chairs were typically made of solid oak, featuring ornate grain patterns, curved arms, and comfortable seating.

Given that only the seat has been reupholstered, the overall originality of the piece adds to its value. The curved arms, intricate grain pattern, and high-quality craftsmanship suggest it may have been manufactured by a well-known furniture company of the time, such as:

  • Larkin Company
  • Hitchcock Furniture
  • Stickley Brothers

Estimated Value:

The value of antique rocking chairs varies significantly based on condition, maker, and provenance. Here are general market values:

  • Common antique rockers (non-branded): $150 - $500
  • High-end brand rockers (Stickley, Larkin, etc.): $800 - $2,500+
  • Reupholstered seats may slightly lower the value compared to fully original pieces

If you suspect the chair is from a well-known manufacturer, its value could be much higher.

Professional Appraisal Recommended:

To accurately assess the maker, age, and provenance, a professional appraisal is advised. Look for:

  1. Maker’s mark, labels, or stamps (usually found under the seat or on the frame)
  2. Joinery style (handcrafted dovetail joints indicate higher value)
  3. Wood type & craftsmanship

Where to Get an Appraisal:

  • Antique furniture dealers
  • Certified appraisers (ISA, ASA, NAJA certified)
  • Local or online auction houses (Heritage Auctions, Sotheby’s, etc.)

Lovely old Empire Revival…

Lovely old Empire Revival Rocker, these were loosely patterned after original America Empire furniture made 1815-40, but date to the turn of the 19th Century. Examples like this could be seen offered in Mail order catalogs in the late 1890's by companies such as Sears Roebucks and Montgomery Ward. The Empire style has never really been a big seller in recent years with most comparables going for under $100.00 at auction.
