 This is a catholic item that has been in our family for over 60 years.  Unfortunately, I don't even know what it is officially called.  It is believed that the bottom compartment was used to hold holy water until used.

I know exactly what this is, its a Last Rites Box. This is the box that would hang in a Catholic home that when someone was dieing, the priest who made housecalls to administer last rites and this would have been there for the priest him to use.

Last rights or Extreme Unction
 has now taken the name of the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.
