Antique Italian Grand Tour Bronze Bell Featuring Roman Soldier

Description:
This is a large, detailed cast bronze bell, measuring approximately 8 3/8 inches tall. It features a finely modeled figure of a Roman soldier standing in full armor, holding a spear and shield. The base of the bell is decorated in high relief with classical motifs, including winged lions, architectural elements, and stylized foliage—typical of the neoclassical aesthetic associated with 19th-century Grand Tour souvenirs.

Medium:
Cast bronze or brass alloy with a naturally aged patina. The internal clapper is intact and appears original.

Origin & Period:
Likely Italian, circa mid-to-late 19th century (c. 1850–1900), produced as a Grand Tour collectible. Wealthy travelers in the 18th and 19th centuries often brought back such items from Italy as souvenirs symbolizing a classical education and appreciation for ancient Roman culture.

Condition:
Fair overall. There is visible wear consistent with age, including surface oxidation, patina buildup, and minor casting imperfections. However, the bell retains excellent structural integrity and functional sound.

Value Estimate (Retail/Fair Market):

  • Retail/Decorative Value: $175 – $275
  • Fair Market/Auction Estimate: $100 – $180, depending on demand and venue

Comparable Sales:

  • Similar Grand Tour Roman or Greek figure bells have sold at auction and antique markets in the $100–$300 range, especially when featuring ornate bases and complete clappers.
  • Examples with identifiable foundry marks or classical inscriptions may fetch higher prices.

Recommendation:
If you plan to sell this bell, I recommend offering it through reputable online vintage marketplaces such as:

  • Ruby Lane
  • 1stDibs
  • eBay (with clear provenance and keyword-rich title)

For a more precise valuation—especially if you suspect a particular foundry or higher artistic value—I recommend seeking an in-person appraisal from a decorative arts specialist or fine art auction house with expertise in 19th-century European bronzes.
