Mahogany Bankers Desk

By amason65, 26 September, 2012
Description

Chippendale style desk with a flame mahogany finish, leather top writing surface, hand dovetailed drawers and a solid oak frame structure.  This executive desk has bracket feet and bat wing brass drawer pulls.  A genuine Yale brass center drawer lock and central drawer locking mechanism denote the banker’s desk qualities.  The drawers are deep and one can be used for files.  There are even pull out writing surfaces on both pedestals.  It has matching hardware on the front side of the desk to make it look like a partners desk but there are no functioning drawers on the front side.  There is a removable segmented wood tray in the middle drawer and most of the other drawers have 2 or 3 wood dividers.  There is some old wiring up in the guts of the desk  - looks like maybe it had some type of security feature at one time.  That's all I know.  Thanks.

Distinguishing marks
Small round brass token nailed to the left pedestal (near where the outside of your left knee would be if you were sitting at the desk) with the number '3715' stamped on it. A Yale drawer lock (most likely no. 561) on middle drawer.
Condition
Good
Size and dimensions of this item
approx. 63” wide x 37” deep x 301/2” high. The drawers are about 29" deep.
Date Period
circa 1920 - 1940
Weight
Very heavy and solid. It does not look like it was made to be disassembled into 3 pieces like most of these style of desks. I can't see how the pedestals detach.
History
Was given to me by my father-in-law.
