Musky Duc Fishing Lure (Byler Corporation)

Item Description:

  • Item: Musky Duc Fishing Lure
  • Manufacturer: Byler Corporation, Kenilworth, Illinois
  • Date Period: Estimated between 1949–1960
  • Condition: Mint (never used, no wear marks, hardware is clean and rust-free)
  • Materials:
    • Body: Wooden
    • Wings: Tin
    • Feet Spinners: Chrome
    • Hook: Stainless steel treble hook
  • Dimensions: 3.5 inches long, 4 inches tall (top of head to bottom of hook)
  • Distinguishing Features: Tin wings that mimic real wing movement in water; original box and instruction sheet.

Historical Context:

The Musky Duc fishing lure was manufactured by the Byler Corporation, which applied for a patent for this design in 1949. This unique lure, designed to resemble a duckling, was intended for muskie fishing and gained recognition for its mechanical movement in the water, thanks to the tin wings and chrome feet spinners. The design is considered innovative for its time and is sought after by collectors of vintage fishing gear.

The inclusion of the original box and instruction sheet, coupled with the lure's mint condition, makes it a highly collectible item for both fishing enthusiasts and vintage sporting goods collectors.

Condition Assessment:

  • Body: The wooden body is pristine, with vibrant and original paintwork.
  • Hardware: All metal components (wings, spinners, and hooks) are rust-free and clean.
  • Box and Instructions: Presence of the original box and typewritten instructions adds significant value.

Estimated Value:

  1. Mint Condition with Original Box and Instructions:
    • Auction or Collector Value: $300–$450 USD
    • Retail Value: $400–$500 USD
    • The mint condition and presence of the box and instructions increase its desirability significantly.
  2. If Without Box or Instructions:
    • Value decreases to approximately $150–$250 USD, depending on condition.

Market Factors:

  • Rarity: The Musky Duc is relatively rare, especially in mint condition with the original packaging and documentation.
  • Demand: Collectors of vintage fishing lures or mid-20th-century American sporting goods actively seek items like this.

Recommendations:

  1. Preservation:
    • Store the lure in its box in a dry, stable environment to prevent paint or metal degradation.
    • Avoid direct sunlight to preserve the vibrant paint colors.
  2. Insurance:
    • Consider insuring the lure for $500 USD, as it represents both historical and collectible value.
  3. Professional Appraisal:
    • If needed for insurance or sale purposes, consult with a vintage sporting goods appraiser or fishing lure expert.
  4. Potential Sale:
    • If you choose to sell in the future, consider listing it through specialized auction houses (e.g., for fishing or sporting goods collectibles) or platforms catering to vintage fishing gear collectors.
