On the back it reads: 1768 - MYERSTOWN PENNSYLVANIA - 1968 Myerstown a spot on an early map marked Hergelroads, along a creek called TULPEHOCKEN became a town called TULPEHOCKEN TOWN by 1757. The first settlers on the then frontier of Pennsylvania, mostly of Germanic background, came as early as 1707. In 1757 Isaac Meier, grandson of an early settler of Palatinate lineage, bought land that was Valentine Hergler-ode's (his father in law) since 1738. In 1768 he laid out the town that was to become known as Myerstown.
The town suffered severe Indian depredations during the French and Indian Wars. Quarries, Mills and Iron Foundries played a great part in the town's early growth. The Union Canal, first engineering geat of its kind in the country was begun in Myerstown in 1793, and caused a business boom that was to last well into the middle of the 19th century.
Myerstown had a school as early as 1767, an Academy by 1840, a college by 1867, and a newspaper as early as 1844. By the end of the nineteenth century the town was the center of a vast horse trading business. These peaks were unsurpassed until the present time which finds Myerstown again accelerating in its development due to the large Drug, Textile, Chemical, Steel Alloy and Plastics Industries.
