Chairs of this type date

Chairs of this type date from the 1870's and up until the late 1990's sold for as much as $750.00 each. Since that time values and interest in Victorian furniture of this type has dropped considerably. Today comparable gentlemen's cahirs sell at auction for less than $250.00.

How can you tell if it is

How can you tell if it is antique?  Another person told me it was a replica  fromthe 50's.  Worth anything or get rid of it at garage sale tomorrow.  I don't like it!!!

Most of the repros are of

Most of the repros are of very recent vintage, I don't of any made during the 1950's. An examination of underside of the chair under the dust cover is a quick way to tell an original from a copy, but you'd have to know what to look for, things like the way the corner blocks are installed, tool marks , the look of the wood and scribe marks etc.... Not something I really can help you with.
