Hawkeye By Burlington Basket Company

By Anonymous (not verified), 6 January, 2008
Description

This is a grenn box with four wooden peg legs that are screwed into the bottom of the box.  There are 2 pouches on the inside hinged cover that are in gold fabric.  There is gold trim on the outside of the box. One handle on the outside is missing.  The inside is an open space minus a small shelf like spot that is about 5 inches wide.  Tag says it was made by Burlington Basket Company in Burlington Iowa.  All I can find when I search this is wicker like products and this is made of wood, somed fabric on the inside and almost like a green plastic like covering on the outside.

Info on Hawkeye by Burlington Basket Company

I just bought a "hawkeye" at the local antique store. The owner gave it to me because I had bought a large ticket item that day. The hawkeye had $7.00 on it (I have seen them for as much as $25), but was not in as good condition as yours. some of the green plastic had nicks, etc. I believe that what it is, is a knitting "basket" that ladies would keep next to their favorite chair, and in the evenings, while the husbands watched tv or whatever, the wife would knit or crochet. the "basket" kept everything (yarn, needles, patterns, etc) looking neat and tidy when not being used. If you sit the hawkeye next to a chair, you'll see it's the perfect heigth for that sort of thing. I've reupholstered mine and am using it for my quilting and embroidery. Hope this helps, I really didn't have much information. :)

Re: Hawkeye By Burlington Basket Company

I picked up a "Hawkeye" wicker laundry hamper recently at the local Salvation Army store. It is 25"(ht.), by 21"(w.), cream color with 2 green stripes. It is in excellent condition, and quite sturdy. Just wish I knew how old it is. Glad to see the company is still in business.
