History
this is an engraved white plate I don't know what the material is. left this by grandmother. she traveled europe extensively and often purchased artwork. it is an engraved picture of a country house setting with what looks like a duke passing thru with a child and a dog with an elderly man pointing them down the road. the signature in the corner is D. Teniers pinx. Across the lower part next to the signature it says "Du cabinet de le Duc de choiseul. written below that in smaller text is "De la grandeur de 8 pounces sur 6.

I own the exact same piece, except mine is not in a frame. It certainly looks like an engraving on IVORY or some material that is supposed to resemble it. It is the color of ivory. Mine is slightly convex in front, but flat in back... but the thickness of the material varies slightly from side to side and top to bottom on the edges. I cannot find the person who made the engraving, but it is an engraving of a painting that is signed "D. TENIERS PINX". Is this the David Teniers III (1638-1685) of the Flemish school?

The translation loosely means: "Office of the Duke of Choiseul". This mans full name was "Caesar, duc de Choiseul" (1602-1675) who was made "Duke of Choiseul" in November 1665. He was "Marshall of France" and a French Diplomat.

I would like to know more about this piece. it looks like yours is in the original wood frame. Mine, obviously was removed. I found mine in an old antique shop about 10 years ago.

I, too, have this piece, and much of my story aligns with yours about the way i received it. On the back of my frame is a note my grandmother must have put on it ages ago, stating that this piece is etched on ivory - and the artist was killed in a plane crash. I have never been able to discover the identity of the artist though. Strange, as there can only be so many engravers who worked in ivory and produced many copies of 17th century flemish paintings before dying in a plane crash..... 

so the mystery continues.
