Re: Old egyptian(??) painting on rice paper

Sorry,

Egypt used papyrus (made from the fibers of water reads) and lamb skin for paper in the past. They use regular paper now.

Rice requires a lot of water to grow in, and Egypt isn't known for it's water bodies save but one (the nile). So Rice Paper in Egypt is highly suspect.

So it's unlikely to be of Egyptian manufacture.

More likely you have a new souvenir item created in Japan (which is known to use a lot of rice paper and gold ink in their works).

The extremely low price is a pretty big give away on that too.

I have seen similar souvenirs sold in Las Vegas at the Luxor Hotel.

It's pretty, but not overly valuable.

Sorry!

Garry, That looks like papyrus paper to me. I have a painting on papyrus that my parents bought me in Egypt about 10 years ago for a few bucks new. Tourist items.

It looks like they use stamps to make the outlines then fill in the rest with shiny paints etc. This one is "Royalty cruising the Nile"..... Tutankhamon and his wife Ankhes-Tut. The plant depicted is Papyrus.

You can get them now for 9.99 made in Egypt.

You are correct not worth much but pretty in the right setting.

Could be, it shows up fuzzy on my screen.
I just went by what the poster said it was, in this case, figuring they had a better look to make that judgement.
I have seen linen ones of this nature too (trying to mimic the papyrus).

Re: Old egyptian(??) painting on rice paper

This is really a tough one to decipher without seeing it in person. The problem is that banana paper, which is often used nowadays used to sell these items throughout Egypt, does look very much like papyrus. Unfortunately you can find these very nice looking banana paper "copies" everywhere in Egypt. They are truly beautiful, but worth $100.00 or less depending on the frame that is used. Please be aware that my comments are only for banana paper and if you in fact have original papyrus that's a completely separate story.

You can't really tell by the photo, but in person I can see lines where the picture was once folded into a square. The material now is very fragile and would easily break if bended in any way. Don't know if this helps tell what it's made out of....but thanks for all your help!
This site is great!! :)
