heavy metal key approximately 12-14 inches long with the inscription "Happy New Year 1892". Almost looks like wheat carved out around the handle of the key.

Not really sure; was always in my house as I grew up
I was thinking the same thing but I can't find any information on this. I've done so many searches on the internet and nothing. I'm at a loss of the significance of this key but I am so curious to find out. ;o)
I sent the Ellis Island Museum an email yesterday with the picture so we will see what they say...I will keep you all posted and let you know the results of this mystery...thanks so much for your input.

The first U.S. immigrant landed on Ellis Island January 1, 1892 from Ireland. Wonder if this is a key to America like a souvenir item?

May be a long shot but try contacting the Ellis island museum. This is a really odd key. I cant see it being anything but a commemorative thing.
