Sleepy Read painting dated 64

By mustangpete, 11 May, 2010
Description

Its really nice. The picture doesn't do it justice. The blocks in the sky reflect in the realistic looking water. I can find no value on sleepy read paintings. But everyone in texas I talk to seems to think it has value. They all know of him. An interesting note is that the painting is dated 64. But he worked in the sheetmetal business until 1968 when he quit to become a painter. Also... Does anyone have any idea what an Early Sleepy Read painting might have sold for? I can't find any sale prices anywhere. Not that I want to sell it. I just would like to know what I found.

Re: Sleepy Read painting dated 64

I know a Sleepy Read out of Cleburne, TX that does art work. He is in his Eighty's now. The Phone number on his Web Gallary is 817-645-8785. Maybe you can find out if this is one of his works. Do you have a better picture of the signature?

Re: Sleepy Read painting dated 64

I have several paintings by Sleepy Read. He is a great artist in my book. I have known him since about 1968. He has always been an artist as long as I have known him. He painted a picture of the ship (from a snapshot)  I served on during WWII. I haven't seen him for a number of years. I don't get around much, but as far as I know he is still alive and okay in the Cleburne area. . He has a son named Style Read who is a very good  artist also.

Re: Sleepy Read painting dated 64

It is on a TOTAL lark that I searched Sleepy Read's name again...it's been several years since last I tried.  My family owns two GORGEOUS Read paintings which my grandmother purchased many years ago (from him, I believe) in southern FL.  Many, many inquiries produced no results from appraisers.  You have MADE my day!  I would like to know more about whatever you discover and I shall drop him a note of thanks...while an insurance value would be nice to have, to us, they are _priceless_.

Re: Sleepy Read painting dated 64

Sleepy Read is still alive at age 91 and paints Mon-Fri at his Gallery in Cleburne, TX.  I've bought several of his paintings and love them all!  He did have an illness that has effected his vision but that's improving.  He and his son Martin are very nice and good to work with.  I don't know how you would have the painting appraised but you could talk with them about when your painting was done for sure.  Good luck!!
