Black Forest miniature gingerbread house

Description

I would really like to know what this is or was used for.  It has a hinged top, and a deep well in the bottom of it

This was inherited from my German Grandmother, and includes an unreadable date and mark on the bottom, looks like it could be 1884.

Though only 1.5 inches at the peak, it is heavy for its size.

antique christmas Candy Container - West Germany This just my thoughts to what this might be. I'm not %100 sure.  Think about money and gifts in the 1800s. If you got a small gift for Christmas it was worth more then anything monay could buy. You get a small gift from the top of the box. but hidden in the bottom was the extra gift of a hand full of candy. I have not found any Gingerbread houses, mostly Turkeys and Santa ...Prices. $9.99 to $125.00  Hope this helps..If you look up these you will see what the base looks like.. I think that part is missing.
