Description
I found this desk online and bought it. Now I'm trying to find out what it's worth and maybe a little more about this desk. I don't see any like it.
This is what i do know:
Matthews Brothers Furniture Co., renamed Matthews Brothers Manufacturing Co. in 1891, was founded in 1857 by brothers E.P. and A.R. Matthews. It is best known for manufacturing furniture for Milwaukee's Pabst Mansion in the 1890s and, later, for making pieces designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The company's business fell off after World War I, and it officially closed in 1937.
Thanks,
Mac
Re: Antique desk, Matthews bros.
Late Victorian and Edwardian furniture like this tends to be an odd mix of styles, often mistaken for late Georgian/Regency. While values for Victorian furniture has fallen a great deal since the 1990's, small desks have held their value quite well. We'd retail a desk like this one in the $600.00-$800.00 range.
Re: Antique desk, Matthews bros.
Thank you Lovejoy for your assessment, I have not seen this type of desk here in Rhode Island at all.
i happened to pick it up on Craigslist for 400.00 and didn't know if I paid to much. I feel a much better now thanks to you.

Re: Antique desk, Matthews bros.
You made a pretty good buy for $400.00, it's a nice piece.
Re: Antique desk, Matthews bros.
Hello, I love your desk! I currently have 12 signed pieces from Matthews Bros. and am always looking for more. I believe I probably have the largest collection of their signed furniture anywhere in the country. I have done a lot of research on this company. Anything with the 409 Water address was made between late 1879 and Jan. 1891. In short, they had exceptional quality and designs. It has it's original finish which is great. Should have rounded joinery on drawers, called Knapp joints. If you ever would like to sell please let me know. Even with the condition issues (missing brass that needs recast and scratches) I would love to have this desk in my collection. If you have any questions my email is [email protected]. Thank you so much. Ray, Milwaukee.
Re: Antique desk, Matthews bros.
Hi Ray, thanks for all the great info. It's tough to find anything on the Internet about the Matthews bros co. I opened the drawers and did see the knapp joints you were talking about, very interest look I would say. I checked briefly online for matching hardware with no luck, but I'll continue to look when I have more time. The desk seems to be missing 1 1/2 main drawer handles and 1 small draw er handle. It's amazing the mirror is in perfect condion also, not a scratch on it.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it at this point, I was actually looking to buy a slant writing desk for my computer when I saw this on Craigslist. If I don't have it refinished, I'll keep you in mind for sure if I decide to sell it. I'm sure it would look nice with your other Matthews bros pieces while adding to your collection.
thanks again,
mac
Re: Antique desk, Matthews bros.
Hi Mac, just wanted to let you know that refinishing the desk may not be the best option for keeping its value. Most serious collectors appreciate an original finish. Sometimes going over it with a good wood oil will make it look a lot nicer and will hide many of the lighter scratches. The deeper nicks and scratches can be touched up with stain. The nice thing about your desk, like you said, is that the mirror is mint and has most of its original hardware. The old finish is important and really cannot be duplicated exactly. It most likely had castors which appear to be missing, but those are easy to find. The key for the lock on the slanted door was also meant to act as a knob to pull open. Hope this info is helpful to you, and I look forward to possibly discussing a sale someday. Take care, Ray
Re: Antique desk, Matthews bros.
Thanks Ray, I will take your advice and probably use the howard's product that Lovejoy suggested.
I did find the front bail plates (missing the handles) in one of the drawers, I also found 2 identical bails on ebay from 1880ish and will transfer the handles to mine so the patina will be the same. As far as the key hole knob, I'm not sure what to look for. If you happen to see a picture of the type key knob, please send it along to [email protected]. I would have never thought about casters, I'll have to look at bottom of the legs then check ebay. Ebay has a lot of antique hardware and such, I had to buy three lots of bails to get the two I need to fix, one lots was the wrong size.
i haven't decided what I'm going to do with it, but will continue to keep it original or as close as I can.
i have you in mind for sure if I decide to sell it.
The pulls on the smaller drawers, I don't think there're original. I'm missing one and was trying to match it and someone told me they are 1900's pulls, but I really don't know.
Anyways, I want to thank you for all the valuable info.
Mac
Re: Antique desk, Matthews bros.
Howard's "Restore a Finish" does wonders on an old finish and covers nicks and scratches. It won't hurt the old finish and can be applied with either a rag or some 0000 steel wool and buffed dry.
Re: Antique desk, Matthews bros.
Thanks Lovejoy, I checked Home Depot online and they do have it. I will be making a trip this weekend.
thanks for the info,
