Description
We purchased this chair a few days ago in Bavaria. We believe it is a wainscot chair but can’t determine its age or value. The chair appears to be entirely hand made and hand carved. All of the turned pieces are slightly different. It appears to be oak. The joints are mortar and tenon and possibly pegs. Clearly there is a poor repair on one of the arms. The back of the chair is definitely a little rougher. Concentric circles are slightly visible around the wainscot carvings... not sure their purpose unless it was some sort of guide for the carvings. It appears to be missing some turnings on the bottom of the “dental” trim on the chair back.
Any information would be appreciated
Re: Wainscot chair
I hate the crappy repair!
Re: Wainscot chair
Chairs like this need a physical appraisal, as they were extensively reproduced during the Victorian era, from the 1830's through the 1890's.
