Walter Scott pencil sketch with signature

By James1219, 16 August, 2022
Description

I have a pencil sketch of Walter Scott with a signature...I can see on the back of the frame that it was reframed in 1970. I took it to a frame ng place and they said it was definitely displayed somewhere because of the hardware used...

When you say it has a signature, are you referring to the “Walter Scott” signature or an artist’s signature? I’m particularly interested in uncovering the artists signature if possible. Also, most pieces like this need to have a physical in-person appraisal in order to determine value, history, and provenance.

Thank you

Thank you for commenting.... Yes unfortunately I am speaking of the Walter Scott signature... Not sure if there is an artist signature underneath... And I wouldn't have an idea on where or how to look.

It would have to be examined outside the frame to determine what it actually is, a print, original or lithograph.

Yes, that's probably best as I'm assuming that it would need to be professionally taken apart to check for artist signatures as well as validated in person as to what media it is and other factors that would affect its valuation and provenance.

So does anyone have suggestions on where or who I might contact....I have never done this with something like this...I buy alot of antiques and can't easily find the value. However this one has stumped me. I've seen prices from$200 to $9000 for similar pieces

Hi James, Not sure what city…

Hi James, Not sure what city you are in, but if you have a local museum or museums, I would begin there and see what they can tell you about your piece. After that I would try to search for reputable antique dealers in your area. I would not rely on what one dealer or appraiser tells you - I would go to at least three and glean what you can out of each one to make a more informed decision. I personally would not sell it to anyone until I have done my due diligence as you don't want to be sorry later. I know this site it adding localization to the appraisers list, but I'm sure you can find some by searching on the Internet using your city + art appraisals in the title. Hope this helps.
