Vintage George Nelson Atomic Cigar Lamp

Item Description:
This is an original George Nelson Bubble or “Cigar” Lamp, manufactured in the mid-20th century (circa 1950s) by the Howard Miller Clock Company. The lamp features a distinctive sculptural form with vertical ribbing and a stretched plastic polymer shade resembling a cigar shape. It's mounted on a minimalist tripod wire stand with original wiring and includes its original factory label, which is a key element in verifying authenticity.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

  • Label clearly reads “Howard Miller Clock Company, Zeeland, Michigan,” indicating legitimate manufacture by the original company.
  • The lamp stands approximately 36 inches tall and is about 15 inches wide, aligning with known original Nelson lamp dimensions.
  • The inner frame shows original wire supports and hardware.
  • Condition shows some minor surface spotting, one puncture/hole (approx. 1" x 0.5"), and worn legs with surface rust, but no major structural damage.

Condition Rating:
Good (Vintage Condition)

  • All original parts appear intact.
  • Still functional.
  • The puncture and surface patina are consistent with age and do not significantly affect structural integrity or value if professionally cleaned or restored.

Provenance:
Passed down through three generations. This provenance increases desirability, especially to collectors who favor documented history.

Historical Significance & Designer Info:

George Nelson was an iconic American industrial designer and architect. His bubble lamps became mid-century modern staples, featured in homes, offices, and design exhibitions. The cigar lamp is especially recognizable for its organic, soft glow and timeless form.

These lamps were made using a sprayed plastic over a steel wire frame—a new material technique at the time—and are considered highly collectible today.

Estimated Market Value (as of 2025):

Condition

Estimated Value Range

Mint/Restored

$2,000 – $2,500

Good/Original (as-is)

$1,200 – $1,800

Fair/Poor (heavily damaged)

$600 – $1,000

Your lamp, given the good condition, intact label, and original wiring, likely falls in the $1,200 to $1,500 range as-is. If cleaned and restored properly, value may rise closer to the upper range.

Recommendations:

  1. Do Not Attempt Home Cleaning – Due to the delicate material of the shade, cleaning should only be done by professionals with experience in mid-century modern lighting.
  2. Retain the Label – This significantly increases the value. Do not remove or obscure it.
  3. Consider Rewiring for Safety – If selling or using regularly, safe rewiring will appeal to buyers.
  4. Professional Appraisal – If you are considering high-end auction sale (e.g., Rago, Wright, or Sotheby’s Design), a formal appraisal by a certified appraiser is recommended.
