4 1870 Hagerstown MD Bank Checks (can't make out who payable to) but checks are paid out for $1000, $100, $38, and $9. They have a vignette of an allegorical woman, blowing a horn on a globe and another vignette of the bank. These is a revenue stamp affixed to the check. So not sure what the value would be. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.
Re: 1870 Hagerstown MD Bank Checks
hello -- as you note, you have a series of paid checks with hand-cancelled US revenue stamps. It is very, very important that you research the names on the checks, especially given values this large ($1000 and $100) during this era. Unlike some other stamps, stamp collectors often like used (on cover), hand cancelled, and afixed early revenue stamps. This is how I prefer to by them, BTW, and sell them easily when I have them. Your lot of four documents with 19th century revenues is worth approximately $16 - $20 (with signees unknown).
