This piece is an original, signed, matted and framed sketch of an unknown middle aged man, presumably an Army associate. The sketch is signed by Friberg and dated in May of 1944, while he was serving in the 86th infantry in Europe. The sketch was matted and framed in Chicago by Favor, Ruhl and Co, an art supply company.
The sketch was found in my attic, along with a print of an etching by Charles Mielatz. Interestingly, both artists attended the same art institute in Chicago, tho decades apart.
This sketch has minimal water damage on the matting but is in otherwise good condition. I have been unable to determine the subject of the sketch, a major detail that may well increase the value significantly... If determined.
The incredible career that followed for Freiberg makes this sketch all the more valuable. His paintings for the Book if Mormon and for Cecil B. DeMilles The Ten Commandments along with the Canadian Mounties commissions secured Fribergs place in history.
Minimal appraisals if $1500 is the asking price.
