Framed Painting/Sketch? of Actress Marlene Dietrich 1934

Category
Paintings
Condition
Excellent
Description

This is a beautiful painting or sketch??, not sure, of actress Marlene Dietrich. It is signed by Cecelio D Acosta, and under that it says Marlene Dietrich, 1934.I can't tell if it is a print or original, it is behind glass, and is in excellent condition, so I'm guessing its a print, however I have searched hundreds of prints of her online, and cannot find this particular one. So, if anyone can help me determine the value or history of this I would greatly appreciate it. THANKS!

ART DECO DRAWINGS

Category
Fine Art
Condition
Good
Description

Artistic Focus – When viewing Avis Zeidler’s wood sculptures, one is at once struck by their substantial, honest, and undeniable presence, and the strength and purity of their forms. Whether in charcoal or graphite paintings, etchings, or sculpture, Zeidler’s rendering of the female figure – round, solid, sensual, and confident - conveys both her artistic skill and her regard for the female form. Similarly, her images of men reveal a sense of strength and respect.

Career Highlights –

• Avis Zeidler was born in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1908.

• It is not known when Zeidler moved to California. However, in the 1930s she majored in art at the University of California.

• Later, she enrolled at the California School of Fine Arts after receiving a scholarship for her studies there. She studied with Ray Boynton, Lucien Labaudt, Karl Eugen Neuhaus, and Ralph Stackpole.

• Zeidler very likely met her husband, sculptor Vladimir Nemkoff (who had arrived in San Francisco from Russia in 1927), while studying at the California School of Fine Arts as he also was enrolled there in the early 1930s.

• Zeidler again received a scholarship, this time to study at the Art Students’ League in New York, where she studied with, among others, Frank DuMond. After a year of study she returned to San Francisco.

• Zeidler and Nemkoff were married in the 1930s.

• Zeidler later assisted Nemkoff in the creation of a wood sculpture for the Hollister, California, post office entitled History of San Juan (Bautista) Mission completed in 1936 under the auspices of the Treasury Relief Art Project.

• During the 1930s and 1940s, Zeidler exhibited widely in San Francisco, including at the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939, the San Francisco Museum of Art (including two one-person shows in 1938 and 1942), and with the San Francisco Women Artists and the San Francisco Art Association.

• Avis Zeidler Nemkoff passed away in San Francisco in 1995.

Hudson river school painting (J.F. Cropsey 1823 -1900)

Category
Fine Art
Condition
Good
Description

Cropsey's (1823 - 1900) has interest in architecture continued throughout his life and was a strong influence in his painting, most evident in his precise arrangement and outline of forms. But Cropsey was best known for his lavish use of color and, as a first-generation member from the Hudson River School, painted autumn landscapes that startled viewers with their boldness and brilliance. As an artist, he believed landscapes were the highest art form and that nature was a direct manifestation of God. He also felt a patriotic affiliation with nature and saw his paintings as depicting the rugged and unspoiled qualities of America

Antique (victorian?) Toy Soldiers

Category
Antique Toys
Condition
Fair
Description

As I mentioned, I believe to be Victorian era or earlier. They are definitely from Great Britain, and were given to me as a gift from an Antique Store owner who was a close family friend. At the time (I was a young boy) I was told that they were quite valuable, but would be even more so later on. I don't know much about them, and have found it hard to identify them (brand, year etc.)

Below I have added some pictures, I have several more available. The paint is original, meaning that whoever owned them tried to paint them (you can see it is quite child-like), and some of them are slightly damaged (several missing bayonets, one horse missing foot).

I have:

2 Cavalry

4 Horses

5 Officers

11 Infantry

1 Cannon missing barrel
