Found in an Oxford desk, 60 years ago. Assumed to have belonged to a sailor and purchased in the southern hemisphere. This is confirmed by the maker: J.Kohn and also compass dip.
Case is ?gun metal
Compass face can be rotated, possible to adjust for variation. Marks are shown on the internal rim when lifted.
This item is a miniature oil on canvas painting depicting a Latin-American arched courtyard
with a door open on the opposite side and a flowering bush on the left.
There are also flowers next to the door.
The painting looks very old, likely antique.
The medium is canvas stretched on board, attached with old-fashion nails at the back.
It is signed in the right left corner, but I did not manage to identify the artist, looks to me like Les/Ros Sorensz, but not sure.
The frame is made of solid heavy wood with natural imperfections, probably hand-made, imitates a window opened into the courtyard. Very charming piece.
