Old Britain Castles Soup Tureen (blue)

By Anonymous (not verified), 27 April, 2008
Description

I have a large soup tureen...Old Britain Castles pattern in the blue color. It has the ususal crazing from aging and at one time there was a repair done on one of the handles, other than that it is in excellent condition...On the bottom of the tureen it says "OLD BRITAIN CASTLES" Made in England by Johnson Bros, All Decorations Under the Glaze, Permanent & Acid Resisting Color, A Genuine Hand Engraving. And there is a capital A in black under the lid. The castle on the top of the lid is "Berry Pomeroy Castle" 1792 and on the side of the tureen is "Raby Castle" 1792. I would like to know the approx date it was made and the value on today's market.Thank you for your help. Becky

Re: Old Britain Castles Soup Tureen (blue)

Sorry to say, but these pieces are quite modern. Johnson Bros. still makes this line of patterns. I've included a link for the current retail for pieces from this pattern.

Re: Old Britain Castles Soup Tureen (blue)

I realize that this pattern is still made...I feel this particular tureen is of an earlier period. The pattern is more vibrant and doesn't look as "washed  out" like the newer version. The lid knob is different and the bottom doesn't really have feet like the newer version, and the insignia on the bottom is different, and it has more of a decorative apron around the bottom. So, which is the older version...the one I have or the ones you see advertised? What is the time period for this pattern? When did they start making this pattern? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Becky

Re: Old Britain Castles Soup Tureen (blue)

The one you have has to be an from an older set. I bought one about a month ago and like you said it has feet and a different handle. The one I just bought is the one I always find online. I have never seen your version before. Maybe take it to an antique store and have it looked at. See what they can tell you.

Re: Old Britain Castles Soup Tureen (blue)

This is from 1930's style. Discontinued 2003, the more recent where made in China. They sell for between 200-400 in excellent condition. With the badly done repair yours is worth maybe 100.00 on a good day. Sorry

This backstampwas added in 1940 to johnson brothers dishes. They didn't change it again until 1960. Thanks geri
