beautiful amber thatcher's dairy bottle patent 1884 one quart

By Anonymous (not verified), 25 June, 2008
Description

This is a really stunning piece. It is a beautiful amber coloring one quart bottle for Thatcher's Dairy Co. On the front is a cow being milked and the words "Absolutely Pure Milk". On the back it has "Thatcher's Dairy Bottle Patent 1884 one quart". On the bottom it says it was made in Italy, I think the company name is crownford china. About 10 1/2" tall. Original lid included.

Re: milk bottle

Does anyone know anymore about this beautiful old amber Thatcher's Dairy Bottle-I found an old one at an antique store and even they weren't sure. They were not selling it so that said something anyway-possibly quite valuable. Need more research. This one was the same amber one as in the picture-very old with 1884 on it. Please respond if anyone knows. Thanks.

Re: milk bottle

I picked the same one up from a garage sale today for one dollar! i thought it was a good buy. it has an embossed cow on the front, it has a wire stopper on the top. I'd be interested to know more about it as well.

Re: milk bottle

I have a clear one,  a link 3 spots down, on Google, have the following warnings for reproductions.  I have a reproduction, but it is worth keeping.

A few Thatcher milk jars will have dairy names embossed in the slug plate on the rear of the bottle.  One such bottle exists from a California dairy.  It is embossed RANCHO CHICO DAIRY    CHICO  CAL.     JOHN BIDWELL in the slug plate.

This milk bottle has many modern reproductions.  If the bottle has any of the following characteristics be suspicious of a reproduction:
   1) Green, amber, pink or blue colored glass
   2) A porcelain stopper, this bottle used a glass lid
   3) Any reference to Crownford China Company
   4) Any reference to Made in Italy
   5) A 1965 date
   6) A pouring spout molded into the bottle lip
   7) A reference to Thatcher's Dairy Bottle Patent 1884, the glass lid on the original milk bottle
was patented in 1886, the bottle did not have a patent date
   8) The embossing THE MILK PROTECTOR below the man milking the cow is missing

Interesting link, check it out.  Good luck to owners of this bottle!

Re: milk bottle

I'm sorry to report that this bottle is a reproduction.  yes a bottle like this was made by Thatcher Glass Co. in Posdam, NY. Thatcher never made any color bottles. As for the blue one, milk bottles never came in blue, because it would make the milk look blue and that is a sign of skim milk.  In thoses day they would have though you were watering down the milk. Ttheir were some amber ones but  All milk bottle that were used in the US were made here in the US.  If you have milk bottle question please visit The National Association of Milk Bottle Collectors web site.   www.milkbottlecollectors.com

Thanks

Re: beautiful amber thatcher's dairy bottle patent 1884 one ...

I've got the same bottle with a ceramic lid. They are reproductions that were made in the 60's by Crawford china company. The 1884 Patent was originally 1886. And the lid was glass. They are very nice pieces, just not originals.
