Jo Mead Hanging Mermaid Lamp

By Anonymous (not verified), 27 July, 2008
Description

This is a Jo mead lamp that hangs from three points of the lamp I have rewired it and the lamp does work.  The are a few chips along the tail and as u can see in the front picture both arms are missing significant pieces of the plaster.  I think it gives it alot of character.  Anyways, I don't know anything about it other than that it has a jo mead marking and I imagine it has all the original metal parts to it and the original ceramic light sockets.  Not sure if the globes are original or not.  Any information or estimates would be appriciated.  Also any information places on Jo Mead would also be appriciated.  thanks

Re: Jo Mead Hanging Mermaid Lamp

Hi,
I have the same chandelier mermaid light.
This hung across the street from the metropolitan meuseum
in new York City.
I suspect this to be high in value and have been told in the neighborhood of 20,000.00 US. It could be more or less.
I have beem researching this piece for two years and
yours is the first one I have seen besides mine.
Thanks D.H. 903-240-1619

Re: Jo Mead Hanging Mermaid Lamp

My husband bought one of the Jo Meade's Chandeliers 18 years ago from a men's clothier, J.Riggins. When you said your chandelier hung across the street from the Met in NYC where exactly did it hang, a restaurant? or a retail store?

Have you since your August posting, found out how much they are worth?

Re: Jo Mead Hanging Mermaid Lamp

Jo Mead was an artist/sculptor with studios in Chicago and Galena, IL. She died in 2000. I believe this piece hung in what she called the "Circus Room" of her Galena home, The Brewery. I last remember seeing it in her house in the 1960's.

Re: Jo Mead Hanging Mermaid Lamp

We have the exact same lamp in our restaurant in Indianapolis. We have owned the establishment for 29 years. The lamp was here when we purchased it. Would love to know more information about it. We are not interested in selling either. If we find anything out, we will let you know.

Re: Jo Mead Hanging Mermaid Lamp

I just bought one of these for resale. In my research I found one that recently (March 2013) went for $650 at auction.  I'm sure the value is significantly higher but auctions can be strange, either inflating or deflating a price depending, of course, on who's there bidding.

If anyone is interested in purchasing, the one I have is available.

Re: Jo Mead Hanging Mermaid Lamp

LOL... I may have painted this one for Jo, you cant really tell.. a bunch of us painted the pieces to her specs.   They were used a lot in movies as set pieces.  Every now and then I catch a glimpse of one in an old movie.  Sometimes I see one in a bar or other public place.  :-)

She was producing up until the 80s for a select few who still wanted the pieces.  Then she sold the company (the molds)  to Bruce Berger.

After that the molds were sold again and  by then they were deteriorating bady.. and are now probably all destroyed and gone.

They were old then and were made of natural latex and burlap.  So, wouldnt last forever.

Both Jo and Bruce are dead now.

The line was extensive.  I think they are only worth what people are wiling to pay for them.  I have a few pieces myself- a carousel horse head, a steern board, a dove cote, a bachante statue and a swan decoy.
