Asian Wood Carving

By wmanna, 12 February, 2010
Description

Please help. I can not seem to find any info about this piece. It was handed down from my Great Grandmother. She thought it was from the 16th or 17th century. It appears to be a wood carving of an Asian figure. I am looking for any information you may have about this piece. Please contact me if you want me to get more info. Thank you!

Re: Asian Wood Carving

looks like a very old root carving...maybe,teak...it does not look like bamboo. It is the Japanese god of longevity, Juroujin (also spelled Jurōjin or Jurojin)or the Chinese counterpart, Shou Xing. He is holding a peach or pumpkin gourd. I hope this gives you a starting point for your research. I'll let you know if I learn more & please do the same, for me...I have a smaller, newer one & am quite jealous(;

Re: Asian Wood Carving

I wish I could...this is a specialist field & requires a hands on evaluation. I am in the same pickle times 10000, with my Asian art. And, the economy has hit the art world hard, too...good stuff down 40%. Sorry I could not help more...just gave you a starting point.

Re: Asian Wood Carving

Aargh...darn site glitch, have to retype.
I wish I could tell you more but it is a specialist field requiring a hands on evaluation. I am in the same boat, X 10000 with all my Asian art. And, the market for good stuff is down, I read, by 40%. I just wanted to give you a starting point & to let you know it is not junk & not to just give it away. It may be worth hundreds if not thousands, to somebody...at least in my humble opinion! The Chinese economy was rocking a short while ago & they were buying their stuff back but it is all up & down, now. It may be contemporary, but it is still nice. You need an auction house to look at it..they may give you a free unwritten estimate. Please, let me know what you learn.... via here or also MySpace.
